Establishment history of the CITR group (or: what "CITR" can stand for)

In 1996, a few enthusiastic academics within the Computer Science and the (former) EEE departments formed a `Center for Information Technology Research', aimed also at providing the research background for the Bachelor in IT programme at UoA. However, it quickly became clear that the creation of a CENTER for IT was faced by strong opposition within the UoA. Thus, the name Computing and Information Technology Research GROUP was used instead. Following a proposal by late Dr. Michael Lennon, the name changed by translating IT in a different way, and in October 1998 the Senate of the University of Auckland agreed in principle to establish the Centre for Image Technology and Robotics (CITR), thanks to support by the Dean of the Engineering Faculty, but even after this renaming still with strong opposition by others. At the meeting of February 1999 the University of Auckland Research Committee finally resolved to recommend to Senate that the establishment of the above Centre be approved. On 1 March 1999 Senate approved this recommendation. - CITR continued with research and teaching activities as initiated by the initial "Information Technology Research" group in 1996. However, due to various reasons, CITR became a `centre at departmental level', basically defining a research group. This allowed that CITR returned in October 2005 to its original research orientation, now rephrased as "Communication and Information Technology Research" group, bringing together academics from city and Tamaki campus working in those fields.

The first 5 years

This slide show (PDF version, 2.7M) reports about the first 5 years of CITR showing a bit of statistics, two examples of courses taught by CITR staff, and several examples of projects, especially of graduate students, in the area of data communication and information technology. Activities in computer vision or robotics have been documented in technical reports on the CITR Technical Reports page.
